A Cozy & Cheerful Christmas Home Tour Fit for the Whole Family

Christmas is just around the corner, and our house has been buzzing with holiday magic — little voices singing carols, cocoa mugs constantly refilling, and pine-scented candles burning from morning until bedtime. This season, we’ve fully embraced the beauty of a casual, kid-friendly Christmas home, and it feels perfectly us. Life with three little ones means decor can’t be too precious or off-limits — and honestly, I wouldn’t have it any other way.

We’ve traded in the idea of a “designer” Christmas tree for one filled with heart. Our main tree holds every family ornament we’ve collected — handmade treasures, road-trip souvenirs, and pieces that mark moments from our lives. It’s sentimental and slightly chaotic in the most charming, memory-soaked way. The kids decorated nearly the entire tree themselves this year, and watching them proudly place ornaments (even when five ended up on the same branch) was a gift in itself. Our nine-year-old has become quite the little stylist — very opinionated about ornament placement — so I let him take the reins.

Every ornament tells a story — a vacation, a milestone, a tiny handmade masterpiece from preschool. The tree is full and wonderfully imperfect, just like our life right now. And while I braced myself for toddler ornament destruction, Owen has surprised us all by being incredibly gentle. A true Christmas miracle from our spirited two-year-old.

Across the room, my favorite collection — vintage ceramic Christmas trees — sits proudly atop our antique secretary desk. Each one has a family history: the white tree from Ryan’s grandma, the green from my mom, and the red one I made with my own hands a few years ago. They glow at night like little time capsules of Christmas past. Inside the hutch are framed photos of holiday memories from each year — kind of like a real-life “time-hop,” but much cozier.

Our dining room gets just a sprinkle of festivity — because that table works overtime. Rather than fussing with a big centerpiece, I added a few twinkling accents that bring holiday cheer without getting in the way of homework, coloring books, snacks, puzzles, and family meals. And yes — twinkle lights everywhere. Once it gets dark, the whole house glows and feels like a warm holiday hug.

The kitchen, as always, is my favorite space to decorate. This year I leaned into bright, joyful colors — pom-pom garlands, playful ornaments, and even a giant metal bow on the range hood. The pom-pom wreath might be my crown jewel this season — bold, happy, and just plain fun.

A slim cashmere tree now lives in the kitchen corner, dressed in more pom-poms and glittery pops of color. And our open shelves are packed with festive dishes — my beloved Fiestaware Christmas collection, some Rae Dunn favorites, and the sweet string-light plates I found years ago at Younkers before it closed. They’re harder to find now, so every year I pull them out feels a little extra special.

I know red can be polarizing — but it’s my favorite color, and honestly, our house was made for it. Against the crisp white and deep gray in the kitchen, the red accents shine. It feels joyful and classic and perfectly at home here.

Under the hutch, we proudly display the kids’ gingerbread houses. Sticky? Yes. Messy? Absolutely. Worth every sprinkle-covered second? Without question. Christmas with kids is equal parts chaos and magic — and I’ll take every sweet, noisy, glitter-covered moment.
